Trying to understand, the Mystery of Death

I love the city of Miami, and specifically South Beach where we have our office for addiction recovery, and the more time I spend there the more I see the prevalence of high levels of addiction and alcoholism.

Randy, a client of Essel’s Holistic Addiction Recovery Program, recalls when his life was spinning out of control. Financially at rock bottom, addicted to using drugs and alcohol for more than 38 years, he found himself in the middle of a divorce, obsessed and dependent on prescription medications. This forced him to make the decision to seek alternative professional help. Frustrated with traditional approaches, Randy decided to utilize the services of Essel’s program.

IT'S TIME TO SLOW DOWN

One of the biggest lessons that I've learned (correct that . . . am still learning) from the Buddhist culture is mindfulness, a slowing down of our daily activities so that we can be fully present in all that we do. Our daily lives can be so full of activity that we can easily forget what we had for lunch two hours after eating it! The Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh and other great teachers have been spreading the message surrounding mindfulness for years. Now it is up to you and me to slow down and be "present" in all that we do. Become mindful of your next kiss . . . go slowly . . . of your next meal . . . eat slowly . . . slow down.

(Part 2)

It may come as a surprise to many that almost 110 million Americans drink coffee everyday, and as noted in a previous column, it’s just not for breakfast anymore.

A coffee researcher (yes there is such a field of study!) from Vanderbilt University, Dr. Tomas DePaulis, says that not only do regular coffee drinkers have a decreased chance of developing the debilitating condition of Parkinson’s disease, but that the latest drugs to treat this condition utilize a derivative of caffeine.

We all know that caffeine boosts energy, but did you also realize that for some people it can aid in decreasing a headache? That’s why the makers of products like Excedrin have it listed as one of its major ingredients.

Along with caffeine coffee also contains powerful antioxidants, which may be one of the reasons it can be beneficial in helping the body in a variety of ways. Recent studies reported in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute shared some downright amazing information: that coffee may significantly lower the risk of colon and liver cancers.

With all of this great news about the benefits of coffee consumption though, we must also look at the downside of the popular drink. Specialty coffees, like a double mocha latte, can have as much or more sugar, calories and fat than a fast food meal! And people who smoke and drink coffee may be at a much greater risk for heart disease. Studies linking high blood pressure and coffee are not as conclusive, but if you suffer from this condition it would be wise to cut down on your coffee consumption.

As a coffee lover myself, I made the switch a number of years ago to drinking my morning brew as a mixture of 1/2 regular and 1/2 decaffeinated, hedging my bets that moderation may just be the key to better health in everything we do..

Coffee is King ... And Queen of Health Drinks?

Whether you call it Java, Jo or Brew, more Americans are visiting coffee shops, bistros and specialty restaurants now for their daily energy booster than researchers can ever remember.

The noon martini has been swiftly replaced by a latte or espresso, making lunch meetings or afternoon social gatherings a healthier experience. Business “mastermind” groups, popularized in the 50’s & 60’s, by admirers of Napoleon Hill, author of Think & Grow Rich, have come back in vogue as entrepreneurs and managers meet in the early mornings over specialty coffees to keep their creative juices flowing.

And now, fascinating news from the world of medicine is supporting the trend of coffee consumption in our country.

Harvard researchers recently reported that those who drink 6 cups or more each day decreased the risk of diabetes in men and women, by an incredible 54% & 30% respectively over coffee avoiders.

What’s even more powerful about this particular study is the fact that this trial involved data on over 120,000 people for 18 years. Direct medical costs for the treatment of diabetes in the United States exceeded $130 billion in the year 2003, making this finding a possible important key to reducing this deadly disease.

Of course, for caffeine sensitive individuals, a more moderate level of coffee consumption may be recommended to decrease the possible side effects of nervousness or insomnia. Either way, coffee consumption is here to stay.

Success...through sacrifice? Powerful.

ADVANCEMENT, Success, THROUGH SACRIFICE

During a discussion recently, the topic regarding our need to follow our dreams came up. A woman had to decide if the challenge of working seven days a week for a twelve month period of time was worth the potential end result of creating the life and work she's always desired. Within one hour, the result from our caller survey was unanimous . . . 9 out of 10 people said it would be worth the risk. What about you? Would you be willing to commit to one year of this type of schedule to be doing what you've always wanted? Could you look at this situation creatively enough and devise a mental plan of attack where you could survive the demands of this type of a schedule? Realistically, what is 12 months of your life, if on average we live for 924 months?

I believe a lot of times we take the easier, "conforming" path in a life we forget just may be able to be filled with more excitement and joy if we are willing to make a few different sacrifices along the way. We fall victim to the belief that by doing what the "average" person would do is really the only way to play it. And I admit following your own journey and going after your dreams, which almost always means creating a nonconformist path, will ruffle a few feathers of those who want you to play it safe . . . be more normal. But the rewards in many cases are too great to pass up.

As an example, when we make the decision to go to school full-time and work full-time, we are able to create the confidence in ourselves that too few people seem to have, a confidence and exploration of our greatness that many never get a chance to experience. Search . Grow . Love . Express yourself.

"Hoops for Homeless Veterans"..Help us,help them!

Our fundraiser "Hoops for Homeless Veterans" needs your help, and we do hope you'll get involved, to help those who have served our country, and now need our assistance.

The statistics are sad, and shocking. According to Veteran Affairs, nearly 200,000 veterans are homeless in the USA on any given night!

And as documented in the "2009 Chaleng Report", in Florida alone, there are only 450 funded beds to treat our homeless vets, while there are over 18,000 homeless veterans in this state in need of our help!

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

The following letter is a powerful testament to the need for each of us to believe in our own worth, abilities, and dreams, regardless of what others may say. So often, we let go of our deepest desires to succeed in life because an authority figure told us to wake up, grow up, and to quit dreaming because "you'll never . . . . succeed in business, lose weight, find someone to truly love, finish school." The list could go on and on, but don't let it in your life. Today is the day to let go of people who do not support your growth, and to surround yourself with those who do. I really appreciate all of the visitors to this site who continually share your stories of success. Keep them coming — you are having an extremely positive impact on the thousands of people who read this column weekly.

Dear David,

I was listening to a radio program recently and a young college girl stated that she was striving to increase her self esteem; trying to increase her confidence in talking in front of folks; and overall seeking confidence in whether she could "make it" in college and "make it" in life.

I was told early on in my college career by a college counselor that I would fail college and not make it. That young girl needs to believe in herself.

NOW, I work for a wonderful company, Hewlett-Packard Company. I am a college graduate (the only one in my family), I am successful and very much love and enjoy my job. I believed in myself in college and I DID NOT believe that college counselor. As a matter of fact, little did she know, she posed a challenge to me that very day, as I know within me from that day that I would prove her wrong, as who was she to dictate my success or failure.

I had another challenge when I started working for Hewlett-Packard at an entry level position. My goal, my vision has always been to work for Hewlett-Packard, I took a substantial cut in pay when I took the entry level position at HP

My first day on the job, I was told by an HP colleague if I planned to move up in our HP office to forget it as there were no opportunities in our local office. Since it was my first day and to be polite, I didn't say a word. I do remember thinking just watch me, as I knew within me I'd move up. Within a year, I left my entry level position to everyone's surprise, as I was the newest HP member to join the local office with not a lot of HP experience per se. I now have a wonderful, enjoyable and challenging (thought provoking) position with HP. I have been blessed and I am very grateful to God and my spirit guides.

Set your goals, have your dreams and make them happen. Believe in yourself!
