Baby steps and goals, they never work! From our XM radio show

I know, I know, we have heard for years that doing something is better than doing nothing.

I wish it was true when it comes to goal achievement, but it is not.

The caller to our show wanted to argue the point, as she said walking 10 minutes a day was all she could do, and she was proud to do that daily.

I asked her what her goal weight was, she replied she had to lose 80 pounds for a health condition.

Ten minutes a day, I  shared, was a waste of time for weight loss.

It was simply the truth.

She had to create at least 45 minutes a day to get  healthier!! To save her life!

Watch this video to get the facts on baby steps, and goal setting.

Are you a limitless thinker? I thought I was....

For years I have been helping people create the success they desire in life, by helping them overcome their own limited mindset, and become limitless thinkers.

And of course, I believed I was living the life of limitless possibilities , until a recent conversation with health and nutrition expert JJ Virgin.

Watch this video, to see what I mean.

Until we are challenged in life, about our own belief systems, we may be falling short on accomplishing the goals we really want!

Challenge yourself today, by working with someone you trust, to see what your "real" beliefs about life, love, success really are.

Can we create what we want, instantly?

Is it possible, to create the life we want , instantly?

Can we let go of 30 years of depression, or low self esteem, in a short, and I mean short, period of time?

Watch this short video, to see the answer to this question.

Slow down, suspend your beliefs that to accomplish our goals means long hard work.

How to "attract money"...for our personal growth.

So many people I've met over the years have said that they would love to change their personal lives, if they only had the money to do so. In other words, their personal growth is important to them, but they do not have the money to hire the trainer, attend a seminar, get sober of go back to school.

This is such a shame, because a lack of money is really just an excuse that we are not serious yet about taking care, of ourselves.

Sound harsh? Watch this video to see what I mean.

Slow down, and go after that desire that is most important for your own personal growth.

Success...through sacrifice? Powerful.

ADVANCEMENT, Success, THROUGH SACRIFICE

During a discussion recently, the topic regarding our need to follow our dreams came up. A woman had to decide if the challenge of working seven days a week for a twelve month period of time was worth the potential end result of creating the life and work she's always desired. Within one hour, the result from our caller survey was unanimous . . . 9 out of 10 people said it would be worth the risk. What about you? Would you be willing to commit to one year of this type of schedule to be doing what you've always wanted? Could you look at this situation creatively enough and devise a mental plan of attack where you could survive the demands of this type of a schedule? Realistically, what is 12 months of your life, if on average we live for 924 months?

I believe a lot of times we take the easier, "conforming" path in a life we forget just may be able to be filled with more excitement and joy if we are willing to make a few different sacrifices along the way. We fall victim to the belief that by doing what the "average" person would do is really the only way to play it. And I admit following your own journey and going after your dreams, which almost always means creating a nonconformist path, will ruffle a few feathers of those who want you to play it safe . . . be more normal. But the rewards in many cases are too great to pass up.

As an example, when we make the decision to go to school full-time and work full-time, we are able to create the confidence in ourselves that too few people seem to have, a confidence and exploration of our greatness that many never get a chance to experience. Believe in Yourself!

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

The following letter is a powerful testament to the need for each of us to believe in our own worth, abilities, and dreams, regardless of what others may say. So often, we let go of our deepest desires to succeed in life because an authority figure told us to wake up, grow up, and to quit dreaming because "you'll never . . . . succeed in business, lose weight, find someone to truly love, finish school." The list could go on and on, but don't let it in your life. Today is the day to let go of people who do not support your growth, and to surround yourself with those who do. I really appreciate all of the visitors to this site who continually share your stories of success. Keep them coming — you are having an extremely positive impact on the thousands of people who read this column weekly.

Dear David,

I was listening to a radio program recently and a young college girl stated that she was striving to increase her self esteem; trying to increase her confidence in talking in front of folks; and overall seeking confidence in whether she could "make it" in college and "make it" in life.

I was told early on in my college career by a college counselor that I would fail college and not make it. That young girl needs to believe in herself.

NOW, I work for a wonderful company, Hewlett-Packard Company. I am a college graduate (the only one in my family), I am successful and very much love and enjoy my job. I believed in myself in college and I DID NOT believe that college counselor. As a matter of fact, little did she know, she posed a challenge to me that very day, as I know within me from that day that I would prove her wrong, as who was she to dictate my success or failure.

I had another challenge when I started working for Hewlett-Packard at an entry level position. My goal, my vision has always been to work for Hewlett-Packard, I took a substantial cut in pay when I took the entry level position at HP

My first day on the job, I was told by an HP colleague if I planned to move up in our HP office to forget it as there were no opportunities in our local office. Since it was my first day and to be polite, I didn't say a word. I do remember thinking just watch me, as I knew within me I'd move up. Within a year, I left my entry level position to everyone's surprise, as I was the newest HP member to join the local office with not a lot of HP experience per se. I now have a wonderful, enjoyable and challenging (thought provoking) position with HP. I have been blessed and I am very grateful to God and my spirit guides.

Set your goals, have your dreams and make them happen. Believe in yourself!

An HP Employee

Are You a Thermostat or a Thermometer? Let's See

ARE YOU A THERMOSTAT OR A THERMOMETER? © David Essel

One of my favorite motivational teachers over the years has been the late Earl Nightingale, one of the founders of the educational resource company, Nightingale-Conant. Earl had a wonderful way with analogies in life. One of his most memorable analogies was the thermostat/thermometer question.

So let me ask you, "Are you a thermostat or a thermometer?" The importance of this question may astound you!

A thermostat type person sets their own "temperature" so to speak. They are in control of their reactions to life and realize the importance of being able to regulate the amount of energy that they put out at any one time. If they are about to get involved in a "heated" argument, they understand the importance of "cooling down" their reaction to the situation. They have a wonderful understanding that no one can make them react, that it is their choice to respond in a way they choose. While no one is perfect, the "thermostat" type person is in control of their own "temperature" most of the time. Have you figured out what type of a person you are yet? Without even explaining what type of person a "thermometer" is yet, you can probably imagine where you fit in.

The "thermometer" type reacts almost entirely to outside influences. Their quality of life, their ability to have a good or a bad day depends on the events going on around them. They react instantly to these influences. A rainy day can easily bring them down. Constructive criticism can ruin a week for them. They fluctuate like the weather in Syracuse, NY (if you don't like it, wait 30 minutes because it will change!) up, down, cold, hot. They are known as "reactors". They have very little sense of control over how they act or so they would like you to believe!

However, anyone can change! It may be an effort consisting of small steps, but it can be done. Our goal should be to react more like the thermostat, able to enjoy life more because we deal with life using a small sense of control. Follow these steps to become a thermostat vs. a thermometer in your life:

  1. Write down the one or two areas where you need to show less reaction to outside influences that you allow to "get to you".

  2. Now, watch yourself change your reaction. In the past, you would have become upset or mad but now visualize yourself reacting as a thermostat in control of your behavior.

  3. Close your eyes and see yourself in that situation (in traffic, at work with your boss/co-workers, relationship issues, etc.).

  4. OPEN your eyes and smile at this first successful step.

  5. Carry this paper with you to reinforce this change.

  6. Do this for 30 consecutive days. Do not hesitate to find a counselor to discuss this situation with. Become the person that is already inside you waiting to be set free. Being the "thermostat" in life can bring you the energy and joy you've always been missing.

God's Delay is not God's Denial.....

Many people who pray for a certain outcome to occur in their lives often confuse the lack on an immediate answer with the thought that God is denying their request.

Delay, as we see in this video, is not denial.Watch and see what we mean.

Faith is built when we believe in something without seeing proof of it in the physical world. God's delay, meaning our prayers may be left unanswered for days , months or even years, has nothing to do with a denial of those prayers.

Slow down, and pass this message of hope on to everyone you know. We all could use the good news in this uncertain world.

A New Year Reminder

A NEW YEAR REMINDER

My assistant Pat found the following story and thought it would be a great "New Year" reminder for all of us who are trying to grow and prosper in life. It is wonderful how such strong truths, when put into story form or with beautiful analogies as this professor did, can be remembered more easily by many of us than if we were to receive the same information in a more factual way. After reading this, take a moment and write down what the meaningful "rocks" are in your life (you'll understand what I'm asking when you get to the end of this story). I wish you joy, hope, peace and love.
------------------------

---A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks right to the top (rocks about 2" in diameter). He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, filled into the open areas between the rocks. The students laughed. He asked his students again if the jar was full. They agreed that yes, it was.
The professor then picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. "Now," said the professor, "I want you to recognize that this is your life. The rocks are the important things — your family, your partner, your friends, your health, your children — anything that is so important to you that if it were lost, you would be nearly destroyed.

The pebbles are the other things in life that matter, but on a smaller scale. The pebbles represent things like your job, your house, your car.

The sand is everything else — the small stuff.
If you put the sand or the pebbles into the jar first, there is no room for the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your energy and time on the small stuff, material things, you will never have room for the 20 things that are truly most important.

Pay attention to the things that are critical in your life. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. Spend quality time with your friends. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.
Take care of the rocks first — the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just pebbles and sand.

Make 2010 A Huge Success! Start today...

Trying to decide how you can make 2010 a huge success, as well as how to pick your new year resolution this year will become a whole lot easier if you simply watch the video posted here.

Too often, we fail to accomplish our most important goals because we are afraid to take the risks necessary to live the life we want to live. We also have a tendency to choose too many goals to go after at the same time.

Make this year totally different. You'll see what I mean after watching this video.

Slow down and decide right here, right now, to make 2010 the huge success you want it to be.

It's Ok to Feel Defeated..Now what do we do?

“IT'S OK TO BE DEFEATED”

The above statement made by the best selling author Paulo Coellho during an interview I did with him, brought a sense of comfort to me. Isn't it true that we so often want to quit, give up over one, two or three defeats, when instead we should just realize that these setbacks are simply a fact of life, not its totality.

We seem so willing to immerse ourselves in defeat instead of just acknowledging it and letting it go.

Many of us define our lives by our defeats vs. our aspirations. "I guess I'm not supposed to be in a loving, committed relationship or I wouldn't have gone through three divorces. If I was supposed to be an actress, it would have happened by now, after all, I'm already 39 years old. I was born an addict and I guess I'll always be one. This is the 10th smoking cessation class I've attended and I'm still smoking."

These comments, and you can probably add your own here, are made by people who have not accepted defeat and moved on, but rather by people who have decided to define themselves and their lives as defeated.

Paulo's books, including one of my all time favorites The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream, have sold over 27 million copies, a number that truly is unfathomable. Yet, here is a man that has faced defeat many times but never defined himself as defeated. As he reiterated the story, when The Alchemist was released in his home country of Brazil, the sales were so slow that at the end of one year his publisher dropped the title. I wonder how many of us at this time would have concluded that we were not the talented writer we had hoped we were and taken this "defeat" as a sign to find some other form of work to do. Instead, Paulo continued his search, not an easy task, for a new publisher. After knocking on many doors, a new one took the chance on his "defeated book" and millions of copies later his story unfolds to become one of immense success.

It is okay to be defeated. I also believe it's what we do after the defeat that really defines us. I ask you to learn from your defeats, your failures, and move on. Drop your urge to label yourself with such limitation. Instead, surge ahead to the newly formed wonder that you truly are.

How do we create the life that we want?

In all of the work that I do, and have done, the question "how do we create the life that we want?" seems to be the theme of my clients lives. In my Life Coach Certification classes, we explore the human need to accomplish goals and create a path in order to do just that.

However, even with the most up to date plans and intentions, there are often periods in our lives where life just does not seem to be going our way. We can visualize success , we can join mastermind groups, we can attend seminars and read more and more books, yet we don't see any tangible evidence for our work.

A very good friend of mine with amazing business talents was sitting in front of me recently lamenting this very situation. "How, with all of the gifts God has given me, could I be in a business that I am so passionate about, that is not growing? After all of the planning, praying and work, could I be struggling so deeply? How can I create the life I desire, when everything is at a standstill?"

His questions reminded me of the lives of Abraham Lincoln and others who struggled greatly on their personal path to success and contentment in life.

As I looked at his plans, and discussed the work he has done leading up to this very point in his life, I saw the answer quite clearly.

There was no human, no worldly answer for his situation. Yes , great people can hang out on the vine to dry with seeming no rhyme or reason for it. And yes , there is a reason for it, although the reason will not make sense to our material world.

Many people have spoken a great truth when they said, "I guess it's on God's timeline , not mine." If you believe in God as I do, and as my friend does, this somehow is supposed to make us feel a little better. We still have to continue to move forward in faith, knowing that there must be great lessons for us to learn in the process of slowing down, of knowing that there is a greater plan for us than we could possible know at this very moment.

Faith, resolve and trust can be greatly enhanced when we use them to their full extent when we are frustrated by the lack of success in life.

Depending where we are on our spiritual path, is how we react to life when we are not getting it the way we think it should happen. If we are deeply into the path of love, trust and faith, we'll go to doubt but for a short period of time. We might become frustrated for a day or even a week, then we'll surrender to "what is." We'll release the python grip that we've created on life with our expectations, and start to flow with, rather than fight, the life we are living.

We might surrender and spend a day in prayer, asking for the power to accept the things we cannot change. We might get out of our heads, and fill our minds with gratitude for all that is going well, as we become what we focus on all day.

By following these two simple yet powerful steps, we create the life that we want instantly, as we have just created a moment, hour or day of inner peace. Wow, what a beautiful experience.

Acceptance is not a cowards way out of life, but rather the path of the spiritual master.

Slow down today and find the life that you want to create sitting right in front of you. Look for love, peace and you will find your world there. Look for doubt and worry, and you'll find your world there as well.

Love, peace, Rev. David www.davidessel.com

Manifesting a New Career

Over the years one of the most exciting ventures that I have been involved in is helping clients to manifest a new career path. They may be in a career and facing burnout, or downsizing, or they just feel it's time to move on and upwards in life.

After deciding where they want to go, we let go of the "how" they will get there and start to create a daily system to follow in order to make this their reality. (I go into great detail on this process in my book and CD "Slow Down" through Hay House Publishing, but this will give you a start. )

1) Create an intention beginning with the words "I AM..." and follow that with what type of work you will be doing by a specific date. "I Am a licensed realtor, therapist, personal trainer, life coach, accountant etc on or before December 1st 2009 doing the work I love with positive associates. "

2) Create a statement of gratitude for what you have in your life right now regarding your current work situation. "I Am grateful for the work I have now that covers my rent. or I Am grateful for the time between jobs that I have right now so that I can find the career I desire. "

3) Create a list of daily action steps with a timeline to follow to create all that you desire, 5 days per week.

A." I awaken at 7am and repeat my intention out loud, then visualize myself in my new position with passion and emotion!"

B. "I follow this with all that I am grateful for right now in my life. "

C. "I send out 5 emails, and make 5 prospecting calls everyday to create the energy that will solidify this new position. "

D. "I write out what I am willing to give in return for this new position. Time per day, willingness to move IE. to Ft Myers Florida for this new job that I am manifesting right now!"

E. Now, we let it go, trust in God or your Higher Power to carry through the rest of the work.

Slow down and realize that you can manifest the career you desire, if you have a plan and follow it daily with passion and persistence!

Love, peace, David www.davidessel.com

You can continue on with the action steps as you see fit, remembering that we get out of life what we put into it.

Failing In Order to Succeed

One of the greatest facts in life is that if we truly desire success, we're going to have to accept failure as a part of the process of being successful. For many in the new thought world, who want to simply keep their mind on "positive thinking", this will be blasphemy. Yet, it is the truth.

As a motivational speaker and author, I can tell you that I too fought this truth for many, many years. Until one day, I simply surrendered to the fact that failing is a part of the process of living. . A part of life. And , proof that I am truly living. For if I do attempt something and fail, at least I know I'm out there doing something to improve my life.

In love, dating, dating, and more dating, regardless how many times it takes, can lead us to the beautiful depths of love. Playing it safe never can lead us anywhere but where we are. In business, taking chances, risks is inevitable in order to grow a business or career. With our health, staying at home where it's safe will continue giving you the body you have right now, but taking a risk and going to a gym when you are out of shape will give you the best shot at changing your body to one you love.

Praying and not receiving the answer you want, is so much better than not praying at all! Letting go of alcohol, smoking, or overeating for the 100th time is so much better than giving up! Yes, Virginia, there is success after failing, but there is no further success possible without trying.

Look at your life right now, and write down what you'd love to see changed. What one change would bring the greatest happiness and success into your life? Now, what risks do you need to take on a daily basis to go after this change? Write down those steps and take them 5 days per week. Risk to grow, risk to succeed.

Do not delay. Do not wait for a better time in your life to go after what you truly want. Read about the people before us who have achieved great things, and what they had to go through to accomplish their goals. For anyone in life who has created the deepest of love, millions of dollars, or an amazing body, there was an equal outlay of effort on their part. Let's join their team and create success, by risking the potential of failure in order to succeed in life.

Slow down.

Love, peace, David Essel http://www.davidessel.com
