IS DEPRESSION CAUSED BY GENETICS? HOLD ON!

Many people, mistakenly believe that depression is caused by genetics. And I understand why. Logically it would seem to make sense, that if your aunt, mother, father and sister suffer from depression we would immediately jump to the conclusion that depression must run in the family and be caused by genetics.

But that is so far from the truth! Our genetics actually is the cause of only a tiny percentage of depression in our country. The main causes of depression have to do with our inability to deal with emotions, or a lack of coping skills in life.

More often than not depression will be caused by emotional or physical abuse when were children or as adults, a feeling that we have lost control of life...love of a love relationship, it could be from the side effects of medication, codependency, our desire to run away from conflict or rocking the boat, death of a loved one, loss of a job, house or even the loss of good friends...

Crucially important in the role of depression is alcohol, smoking, food addiction, drug addiction, these are all outward signs that we are unhappy, possible depressed as we try to self medicate. And many illnesses or injuries can cause depression

When we learn correct coping skills though, we can do so many great things in minimizing the negative affects of depression.

My dad, sister and brother suffered from depression. My aunt did too. I suffered for years with a deep clinical depression. Yet my family and I healed. If, depression in our family, like most other families was genetically based we would never heal...or we would have to be on medication for life.

I have worked with thousands of clients over the last 36 years who struggled with depression and healed. Yes, a tiny percentage of people with depression may be genetically based...but the largest cause would be examples listed above. The major problem that occurs when we so quickly tell people that their depression is genetic, is that they give up looking for ways to heal themselves. And why should they since they've been told it's in their genes?

Enough of the old school thought process that is outdated and dangerous for many people to be told.

There is great help available!
